Volunteering@TheRowers

Mosman Rowers is a local institution. A Club owned by the members, run by the members for the members. Volunteers are critical to us keeping our unique heritage and strengthening our position as a community hub in Mosman and highly valued part of the Mosman Bay community.

The original rowing club of the Mercantile Hotel in The Rocks, was located on Dawes Point before relocating in 1911 to Mosman Bay. A ‘new’ clubhouse was built in 1933 and has been converted overtime from a rowing shed to a social club.

Rowing at Mosman Bay ceased when the neighbouring marina expanded and the ferry schedules increased, with the Mosman Rowing Club progressively relocated to Middle Harbour in the 1960’s.

It has remained a volunteer-driven Club with some 1500 members and hundreds of social visitors each week. Our members are the life blood of our Club.

The club’s governance is overseen by an active and professional Board, with a number of committees, such as the Operations Committee, Social Committee, Building Committee, Risk & Audit Committee, Finance Committee, Sailing Committee, contributing to how the club runs. Those involved are all volunteers who are committed to the viability of the Club and its role in the Mosman community.

We pride ourselves on being a truly accessible community hub for family friendly, social interaction and water-based sport and recreation. We are also a great venue for special occasions: family events, weddings, birthdays, end of life celebrations and small conferences. The Bird & Bear Group is engaged by the Club to manage the day to day operations of the club and the food and beverage offerings.

Our beautiful heritage building comes with high maintenance expenses. We rely on membership and fundraising activities like the Friday Night Raffle run by volunteers plus any grants we can access to keep the Club on a sustainable footing.

Being volunteer-based means we always need new recruits to assist in a variety of ways. We are not short of ideas of other things we would like to do, so if you have good IT, financial, audit or building skills, if you enjoy socialising, wish to contribute to the Mosman community and have a few hours to offer once a month, please contact Grace our hostess and events co-ordinator on info@mosmanrower.com.au

The combination of a stunning location, accessible by ferry, bus, walking and car, the rich character and heritage of the clubhouse, with a very warm and friendly culture makes Mosman Rowers a place where everyone, young and old, feels welcome.

In addition, to preserving the Club’s heritage, the focus of the Board is to advance and contribute to the Mosman community in a variety of ways.

We hold our annual art exhibition Art@The Rowers to promote and support local artists. Ken Done, Ben Quilty and Tim Storrier have been past judges of the acquisitive exhibitions.

We also provide space for artists to exhibit with our Exhibitions@The Rowers program. We host a regular In Conversation series, monthly Jazz@The Rowers, regular Trivia@The Rowers and live music on weekends, plus a big annual Christmas party for adults and children. Where else but the Rowers, does Santa Claus arrive by boat?

We also fundraise for important causes like supporting Indigenous communities in need and Clean Up Australia each year. We hosted a major fundraiser for Ukraine in conjunction with UNICEF..

We regularly host mahjong, book, sketch and fitness classes, and Mums & Bubs groups. We offer occasional fishing, paddling, remote control sailing, and in partnership with our neighbours in the bay, Sydney Amateur Sailing Club, Atlas Sailing and Freedom Boating will see many more on-water activities available. Our newsletter Rowers Reel together with website and in-venue promotion keeps Members informed and in contact. But all these activities need volunteers with relevant expertise to help.

A little bit of combined effort from volunteers, together with our committed general manager, Jimmy and his wonderful team, makes the Mosman Rowers a special and unique club. You can be part of this by contributing a small amount of your time in any number of ways – selling raffle tickets occasionally on Friday nights, helping with

our newsletter, the Christmas party arrangements, joining one of our committees, becoming a regular Mosman Rowers sailor, and so on. For more information, please contact: info@mosmanrowers.com.au or speak to our Manager when you are next in the Club
